Apostolic Nunciature
in Cyprus

            Establishing the Apostolic Delegation in Jerusalem and Palestine on February 11, 1948, Pope Pius XII wanted to include in its territory the Island of Cyprus.  After gaining its independence in 1959 and becoming a republic in 1960, Cyprus established diplomatic relations with the Holy See on May 28, 1973.  Since then, the Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem is also the accredited Apostolic Nuncio to Cyprus whose headquarters are located next to the Franciscan Church of the Holy Cross, at Paphos Gate, in Nicosia.
