       H. E. Msgr. Leopoldo Girelli was born in Predore (Italy) on 13 th March 1953, and he was ordained priest for the Diocese of Bergamo on 17 th June 1978. He has a P. H. Doctorate in Theology and a Master in Canon Law. On July 1987, after completing the studies in Diplomacy and International Law at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Vatican, he joined the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See. He served successively in the Apostolic Nunciatures to Cameroun and to New Zealand; then he was moved to the Section for General Affairs of the Secretariat of State and later on he was assigned to the Apostolic Nunciature to the United States of America.
On 13 th April 2006, Msgr. Girelli was appointed Titular Archbishop of Capri and Apostolic Nuncio to Indonesia and to Timor-Leste. He received the Episcopal Ordination on 17 th June 2006. In January 2011, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Singapore and to A.S.E.A.N., Apostolic Delegate to Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, and concurrently he was the first non-resident Papal Representative to Vietnam. On 13 th September 2017 he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Israel and Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem, and on 15 th September was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Cyprus. Aside from Italian, his mother language, he speaks English and French.
Being the Apostolic Delegate in Jerusalem he is the Territorial Prelate of Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center, Grand Chancellor of the Bethlehem University, President of the Secretariat of Solidarity, Honorary President of the Union of Religious Superiors in the Holy Land.
